Second-day students will split into groups to create their own still-life selection using the rules of composition. \n10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. – Paper Marbling (Monday Only)/Design Basics (Wednesday Only)\nDuring paper marbling we will be making patterns that float on water. The students will transfer these unique patterns onto paper. This paper after it dries will then be used in our book making class. \nIn design basics\, participants will need to bring paper and a pencil for notetaking. Students will discover the core principles and how to implement them into their work. Small studies will accompany a PowerPoint presentation. The instructor will also show how the creative process works and the steps in planning to make a finished piece of art. \n1:15-2:45 – Polymer Clay (Monday & Wednesday)\nIn polymer clay we will plan our sculpture and execute our 3D design. Tools\, wire\, and clay will be provided for the students. If you would like additional elements\, please bring those to camp. We will be working with pliers\, x-acto knives\, rolling pins\, and sculpting tools. Firing is available if applicable. \n3 – 4:30 p.m. – Printmaking (Monday & Wednesday)\nStudents are not required to bring anything to participate. Mastodon will supply paper\, gels\, and acrylic medium. The instructor will do a simple demonstration and hold an open class where everyone works independently. All materials are shared amongst the class at stations. They will have free choice on spiral\, scrunch\, and free form techniques. A quick lesson over color theory will be given before they choose their colors. The possibilities are endless between designs and color selection. \n3 – 4:30 p.m. – Open Studio (Thursday)Open studio time will allow more time to complete a workshop project or explore mediums more in-depth. An instructor will assist if needed for all creative purposes.\nFriday\n9 – 10:30 a.m. – Alcohol & Ink (Friday Only)\nDuring alcohol and ink all supplies will be provided. Design basics will play a large role in this potential abstracted design. We will learn different techniques to create light to bold markings and pigment blending. The result could be a background\, layered in mixed media\, or make a final art piece. \n10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. – Plein Air (Friday Only)\nIn plein air students do not need anything to participate in this outdoor chalk pastel lesson. We will enjoy the outdoors while learning a new medium.  Critical thinking is engaged by making the children think about color theory and composition to help them pick the perfect landscapes. We will be discussing atmospheric perspective and focal fall-off. \n1:15 – 2:45 p.m. – Watercolor (Friday Only)\nThe watercolor class will be in the studio. All mediums will be provided. We will be working off hand-selected designs by the students. Students will be working on the design principles and learning how to layer watercolors without overworking them. \n3 – 4:30 p.m. – Open Studio (Friday)\nOpen studio time will allow more time to complete a workshop project or explore mediums more in-depth. An instructor will assist if needed for all creative purposes. \nThroughout the week these topics will be discussed.\nArtist Write-Ups and Intellectual Property Discussion: Students will need to bring paper and a pencil for note taking. An artist statement writing seminar will be directed at the beginning of class and students will create their own. We will also teach students about copyright laws and what digital output to use to prevent online piracy. We will highlight metadata and the importance of your digital and/or physical signature. \nDigital Representation and Reproduction Options: Knowing how to digitally represent yourself and printing options is just the beginning of making your passion into a business platform. We will discuss how to make your art marketable. \nCritique: Our students will select their favorite piece from the week and have a peer review. As artists\, this is how we learn together. All items selected will be allowed to be put into the mastodon fair at no cost.

We will enjoy the outdoors while learning a new medium.  Critical thinking is engaged by making the children think about color theory and composition to help them pick the perfect landscapes. We will be discussing atmospheric perspective and focal fall-off. \n1:15 – 2:45 p.m. – Watercolor (Friday Only)\nThe watercolor class will be in the studio. All mediums will be provided. We will be working off hand-selected designs by the students. From there the students will shade and shape that into the real-life objects they are seeing. Students will be drawing a still-life study with a one-point light source. The class will begin with the instructor demonstrating how to translate forms and create shadows. The instructor will be walking around the room assisting students. On Monday we will be working strictly with pencils to focus on tone gradients. Wednesday the kids will be working with pastels applying color and viewing how colors reflect off each other. \nPOTTERY FOR BEGINERS\nIn Pottery we will be using air dry clay. The students will be taught how to make a vessel using pinch\, coil\, slab\, or score and weld techniques. On the second day we will be able to decorate our work with paint. \nTIE DYE\nWe will be outside to tie dye our camp shirt that came with their registration. Camp organizers will try their hardest to obtain shirts for all campers. If that is not possible\, please have a shirt available for them. The students will use a resist dyeing technique. The instructor will demonstrate different ways to fold\, twist\, and pleat the fabric. They will have free choice on spiral\, scrunch\, and free form techniques. A quick lesson over color theory will be given before they choose their colors. The possibilities are endless between designs and color selection. Students may be sent home with further care instructions. \nMOSAICS\nIn Mosaics the students will have to plan out their design. After their project is fully drafted\, the instructor will assist in helping the students do the following steps: planning review\, making your art board to the correct size\, and placing a design that fits the space. \nStudents will work on Monday with paper and smaller fragments to practice for the following class. Wednesday we will make a steppingstone with small glass fragments in cement. The cement will take two weeks to fully cure. The students will be sent home with further care instructions. \nMIXED MEDIA COLLAGE\nIn mixed media collage the class will learn how to create a unified piece of art using different materials\, like paper\, fabric\, paint\, and found objects. These are combined and arranged onto a singular surface. As a class we will explore different textures\, colors\, and subjects. The students will be taught how to layer different materials\, apply paint or ink over collage elements\, and how to implement texture with various mediums. \nIn this class we are trying to create personal\, unique\, and expressive artworks. I would love if each student could bring some items from home. These could include Paper (newspapers\, magazines\, photographs\, etc.)\, Fabric\, Paint (acrylic\, watercolor\, etc.)\, Ink\, Found objects (buttons\, beads\, etc.)\, and Text. \nARTIST INSPIRATION PAINTING\nArtist inspiration will be a simple art history lesson\, and we will play a game. The students will have a prompt to create a new piece of work inspired by the artist of their choosing. This exercise is meant to challenge and get the students creativity flowing. \nART PRINCIPLES\nArt Principles will consist of basic color theory and design; this is very crucial to successful art. Students will be given a small lesson\, and we will have a scavenger hunt. An exercise will be given to groups to teach them how to work together and make a successful collaborative project. \nILLUSTRATED SELF\nIn illustrated self we will work on mixed media pieces and explore what makes us each unique. The children will use this exercise to find things that represent them as a person. The goal is to learn how to overlay different mediums and to create a self-portrait without an external reflection of their physical person. \nWATER TRANSFER PRINTING\nDuring Water Transfer Printing students will create a marbled design on objects by dipping them in water. The marbled pattern created on the water’s surface will adhere to the object. This process is also known as hydro graphics. Water Transfer Printing allows for complete coverage\, even on complex\, three-dimensional shapes. We will have a demonstration then each student will be able to create their very own design and transfer onto the objects provided. \nMIXED MEDIA SUMI-E / RESIST\nIn mixed media students will learn how and what is a resist layer in addition to the art of Sumi-e. In Resist the students will be taught how to block pigment transfer by blending watercolors over the blocked designs. An open creative session will take place as the instructor walks around the room and helps. During Sumi-e the students will paint organic forms using brushes. 3D applique and the practice of ink blowing will be demonstrated for the class. A quick nature inspired project will then follow. \n3D PAPER RELIEF SCULPTURE\nIn 3D Paper Relief we will be making small sculptures using assorted paper and glue. Students will be working on their hand eye coordination with precision cutting and gluing. The class will work on their design and engineering for structural integrity. The students will have to consider color\, patterns\, and durability. If there is anything you would like them to bring from home to potentially implement it into your work\, please do so. The sky’s the limit with this challenge. \nPLEIN AIR\nIn Plein Air the children will go outside as a class to draw what they see. Everyone will be given materials for working outdoors. During this segment the students will learn how to slow down and observe what is around them. The subject will be selected by a game of I-Spy. (Please send sunscreen if you would like. We do try to stay in the shade as much as possible during these times.) \nCARTOONING\nIn Cartooning students will be learning character development and story blocking. We will learn how to create characters and how to tell a story that is simple\, relatable\, and easy to understand. The cartooning application will be applied in a one-panel format. As a class\, we will draw\, outline\, and finish with watercolor\, marker\, or colored pencil. In modern day terms it is creating a main character and putting them in a meme. \nOPEN STUDIO\nOpen studio time will allow more time to complete projects or explore mediums more in-depth. An instructor will assist if needed for all creative purposes. \nROCK PAINTING\nDuring Rock Painting students will create art that can even go in the garden. The instructor will help students create Mandalas or other designs. We will be using paint markers and 3D paints. I want the kids to get in the flow\, play with colors\, shapes and patterns. They may sketch the design prior onto your rock with a pencil or just go for it. Full creativity should be unleashed by layering on designs\, gradually building up the complexity with shapes and contrasting colors. Rock Painting is a super-easy technique known as pictographs. Pictographs refer to human-made markings on natural rock surfaces. This practice is so old it is often found in caves or open-air sites. Even though it is no longer the stone age we can still have fun painting rocks. \nPOP ART/Popsicle Day\nOn Fun Friday we will finish off the week by jumping into the world of Pop Art. The class will be shown some iconic famous works and taught about the artist that made them. We will get a cold treat and make our very own version of what Pop Art is to us. All materials are available to our young artist. The instructor will help the students as needed. (If there is a food allergy\, please make sure we are aware of it.)

On Monday we will be working strictly with pencils to focus on tone gradients. Wednesday the kids will be working with pastels applying color and viewing how colors reflect off each other. \nPOTTERY FOR BEGINERS\nIn Pottery we will be using air dry clay. The students will be taught how to make a vessel using pinch\, coil\, slab\, or score and weld techniques. On the second day we will be able to decorate our work with paint. \nTIE DYE\nWe will be outside to tie dye our camp shirt that came with their registration. Camp organizers will try their hardest to obtain shirts for all campers. If that is not possible\, please have a shirt available for them. The students will use a resist dyeing technique. The instructor will demonstrate different ways to fold\, twist\, and pleat the fabric. They will have free choice on spiral\, scrunch\, and free form techniques. A quick lesson over color theory will be given before they choose their colors. The possibilities are endless between designs and color selection. Wednesday we will make a steppingstone with small glass fragments in cement. The cement will take two weeks to fully cure. These are combined and arranged onto a singular surface. As a class we will explore different textures\, colors\, and subjects. The students will be taught how to layer different materials\, apply paint or ink over collage elements\, and how to implement texture with various mediums. \nIn this class we are trying to create personal\, unique\, and expressive artworks. I would love if each student could bring some items from home. On Monday we will be working strictly with pencils to focus on tone gradients. Wednesday the kids will be working with pastels applying color and viewing how colors reflect off each other. \nPOTTERY FOR BEGINERS\nIn Pottery we will be using air dry clay. The students will be taught how to make a vessel using pinch\, coil\, slab\, or score and weld techniques. On the second day we will be able to decorate our work with paint. \nTIE DYE\nWe will be outside to tie dye our camp shirt that came with their registration. Camp organizers will try their hardest to obtain shirts for all campers. If that is not possible\, please have a shirt available for them. The students will use a resist dyeing technique. The instructor will demonstrate different ways to fold\, twist\, and pleat the fabric. They will have free choice on spiral\, scrunch\, and free form techniques. A quick nature inspired project will then follow. \n3D PAPER RELIEF SCULPTURE\nIn 3D Paper Relief we will be making small sculptures using assorted paper and glue. Students will be working on their hand eye coordination with precision cutting and gluing. The class will work on their design and engineering for structural integrity. The students will have to consider color\, patterns\, and durability. If there is anything you would like them to bring from home to potentially implement it into your work\, please do so. The sky’s the limit with this challenge. \nPLEIN AIR\nIn Plein Air the children will go outside as a class to draw what they see. Everyone will be given materials for working outdoors. During this segment the students will learn how to slow down and observe what is around them. The subject will be selected by a game of I-Spy. (Please send sunscreen if you would like. We do try to stay in the shade as much as possible during these times.) \nCARTOONING\nIn Cartooning students will be learning character development and story blocking. We will learn how to create characters and how to tell a story that is simple\, relatable\, and easy to understand. The cartooning application will be applied in a one-panel format. As a class\, we will draw\, outline\, and finish with watercolor\, marker\, or colored pencil. In modern day terms it is creating a main character and putting them in a meme. \nOPEN STUDIO\nOpen studio time will allow more time to complete projects or explore mediums more in-depth. An instructor will assist if needed for all creative purposes. \nROCK PAINTING\nDuring Rock Painting students will create art that can even go in the garden. The instructor will help students create Mandalas or other designs. We will be using paint markers and 3D paints. I want the kids to get in the flow\, play with colors\, shapes and patterns. They may sketch the design prior onto your rock with a pencil or just go for it. Full creativity should be unleashed by layering on designs\, gradually building up the complexity with shapes and contrasting colors. Rock Painting is a super-easy technique known as pictographs. Pictographs refer to human-made markings on natural rock surfaces. This practice is so old it is often found in caves or open-air sites. Even though it is no longer the stone age we can still have fun painting rocks. \nPOP ART/Popsicle Day\nOn Fun Friday we will finish off the week by jumping into the world of Pop Art. The class will be shown some iconic famous works and taught about the artist that made them. We will get a cold treat and make our very own version of what Pop Art is to us. All materials are available to our young artist. The instructor will help the students as needed. (If there is a food allergy\, please make sure we are aware of it.)

DESCRIPTION:2024 Mastodon Fair Summer Art Camp for Grades 3-5\, July 17-18\, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.\nHillsboro Jefferson College\, Fine Arts Building\, Rooms 200 & 212 \nOpen to students going into 3rd-5th grade. Space is limited to 15 students per session. Payment must be received before securing space. See listing below regarding if supplies are needed or if they will be supplied.\n\nPricing (Grades K-5)\nEarly Enrollment (April 1 – July 6) – $110 for 2 days\, $55 per day\nWeek Prior (July 7 – July 13) – $140 for 2 days\, $70 per day\nWithin the Week (July 14 forward) – $170 for 2 days\, $85 per day \n  \nWednesday & Thursday (Grades 3-5)\n9 – 10:30 a.m. – Clay Sculpting\nIn Pottery we will be using polymer clay. The students will be taught how to make a sculpture using pinch\, coil\, slab\, and scoring. On the second day we will be able to adhere structural elements or add functionality pieces.\n\n\n10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. – 3D Drawing / Plein Air \nIn drawing we will focus on creating basic 3-dimensional forms and how to translate that to real life objects. Students will be drawing a still-life study with a one-point light source.  The class will begin with the instructor demonstrating how to translate forms and create shadows. The instructor will be walking around the room assisting students.\n\nIn plein air the children will go outside as a class to draw what they see. Everyone will be given a clipboard and materials for working outdoors. During this segment the students will learn how to slow down and observe what is around them. \n\n\n1:15 – 2:45 p.m. – Illustrated Self\nIn illustrated self we will work on mixed media pieces and explore what makes us each unique. The children will use this exercise to find things that represent them as a person. The goal is to learn how to overlay different mediums and to create a self-portrait without an external reflection of their physical person.\n\n\n3 – 4:30 p.m. – Artist Inspiration / Abstract Design\nArtist inspiration will be a simple art history lesson and game. After selecting a famous artist\, the students will have a prompt.\n\nIn abstract design we will teach basic color theory and design\, this is very crucial to good abstract art. Students will be working with layered shapes to create an overlapping design. We will talk about the importance of color placement within their design. The instructor will be walking around helping students around the room.
