2017 Mastodon Fair Family Day Schedule

2017 Mastodon Fair Family Day will be on Saturday March 18th from 9 am – 1 pm at the Jefferson College Fieldhouse in Hillsboro, MO.  This event is free and open to the general public.  Please join us for fun and educational art and science demonstrations and activities!  Check this website and our facebook page for the latest event updates! The schedule for Family Day is as follows:

  • 9:00 AM   Doors open to the public
  • 9:15 AM – 10:00 AM   Student presentations of science exhibits in the Main Gym (see note at bottom of page)
  • 10:15 AM – 11:00 AM   Endangered Wolf Center presentation – front of Main Gym (bleacher seating available)
  • 11:15 AM – 12:00 PM   Student presentations of art exhibits in the Main Gym (see note at bottom of page)
  • 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM   Sponsor Recognition Ceremony and Solar Eclipse presentation – front of Main Gym (bleacher seating available)
  • 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM   Family Day closed; please pick up your art or science exhibit (see note at bottom of page)

Our theme this year is the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse!  Come and learn all about this once in a lifetime eclipse, how to view it safely, and purchase your eclipse solar viewing glasses from the Mastodon Fair Store!

Learn about all of the wild canids that live at the Endangered Wolf Center and their conservations efforts to protect these fabulous animals.  Don’t miss their special presentation with Daisy the Fennec Fox at 10:15!
The students at Missouri S&T Student Design & Experiential Learning Center have been making all kinds of cool things like solar cars, mars rovers, robots, and more.  Learn more about their amazing projects!
Did you see R2-D2 in Rogue One or Star Wars the Force Awakens?  Well now you can meet him in person and learn how these fantastic droids are made using STEM skills with the St. Louis R2 Builders Group!
Make mysterious Boo Bubbles with our friends from Myseum and find out about all the other fun things you can do at Myseum!
 Make an Interior Design masterpiece with the talented designers from Archimages, Inc.
BloxelsLogo_wtagline  Learn how you can create your own video games using Bloxels!  Bloxels is a hands-on platform for kids to build, collaborate, and tell stories through video game creation.
Our friends from the Space Museum in Bonne Terre will be visiting to share some cool space artifacts and fun science demos.
Did you know you can make Robots with Legos!  Meet the members of the Jefferson County Robotics 4-H club and learn how they built and programmed their own robots with Legos and arduinos!
Meet some birds like owls, hawks, and falcons from the World Bird Sanctuary and learn why birds are an important part of our environment!
 TRI-COUNTY WOODCARVERS Let the Tri-County Woodcarvers introduce you to all kinds of fantastic techniques to make art out of wood!.

Put your engineering skills to work as you design, build, and launch rockets!  Learn about other programs, from simulated space missions to 3-D printing summer camps, also available through the Challenger Learning Center.

shoeman logo Bring your gently used shoes to donate to Shoeman Water Projects.  Please tie or rubber band each pair of shoes together when donating.  Learn about the importance of purified water and how donating your shoes can help buy wells for those in need in other countries. 
Are you a “maker”?  Find out about all of the cool things the Makers from Arch Reactor are creating!
Have you ever wanted to make your own robot?  Well the students from The Lutheran Roboteers & STEM2U Youth Program have!  Come meet them and their robots!
DinoEgg1  At our Family Day, we try to bring in activities for the entire family. One of the favorites every year is the Dinosaur Egg Hunt. There is a $5 entrance fee per person to enter our Jurassic Jungle. There, you can stroll through our trees, view our dinosaurs, and choose three dinosaur eggs to turn in at the end. Every egg is a winner of a prize valued at $3 or more! Sponsored by the Jeffco Business Network
Come meet the Rockwood Rangers 4-H club.  This fabulous group meets bi-weekly in Arnold to do a variety of fun projects, service learning, and other activities!
Jefferson County Drug Prevention Coalition is back again this year to share information about the benefits of living a drug free healthy lifestyle and how you can help with drug prevention efforts in Jefferson County.

Can you stump The Bug Doctor?  Test you insect knowledge and learn more about these small creatures that play an important part in our ecosystem.
 Kettlehut Smokehouse will have some great barbecue for Lunch!
Student presentations of Science and Art exhibits at Family Day

At Family Day during times listed in schedule above students are invited to stand by their exhibits and present them to the public. This is an excellent opportunity for students to develop presentations skills, respond to questions about their exhibits, and receive praise for their accomplishments. Please note student presentations during Family Day are NOT required in order to be eligible for any prizes or awards distributed by the Mastodon Fair this year.

Exhibit Pick-up

If an exhibit was entered directly by a parent, then the parent is responsible for arranging for the exhibit to be picked up. If an exhibit was entered by a school/teacher, then parents should contact the school/teacher to determine who is responsible for picking up the exhibit. Any exhibits not picked up during the scheduled time on March 18 will be placed in the main lobby of the field house and can be picked up during regular business hours. Any projects not picked up by close of business on Monday March 20 will be disposed of.
